The processes and materials
This work began as MRI data of a healthy human heart, in the form of a series of black and white images. These black and white images were translated into a 3D computer file. Then the 3D heart data was "made real" using a Rapid Prototyping Machine. The RP machine produced highly detailed solid plastic objects directly from the 3D computer data (accurate to .1mm).

The silver heart was made by coating the Rapid Prototype with a thin layer of copper. This was then coated in silver. Silver appear pure white in colour until it is polished or abraded. I have left some recesses as unpolished silver (white) to emphasise the three dimensionality of the object.

This work was made via a collaboration with surgeon Francis Wells, cardio thoracic surgeon at at Papworth Everard Hospital.
